"Everything I've tried so far has been wonderful. Every room is comfortable and the staff are welcoming and kind. Floating is an incredibly relaxing experience and the sauna is SO CLEAN and actually hot. I have psoriatic arthritis and the cold water immersion feels so great on my inflamed joints."

Why traditional sauna?

The most researched wellness tool on earth.

The Finnish have been using saunas for centuries. However, it's only in the last 20 years that researchers have quantified exactly why. The landmark Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease study followed over 2,000 Finnish men for decades. As a result, the data is some of the most compelling in wellness research.

Regular sauna use is associated with dramatically lower risk of the things most likely to kill you.

Furthermore, unlike most wellness trends, sauna doesn't require you to do anything difficult. You simply sit in the heat. Your core temperature rises 2-3°F. Your heart rate climbs to 100-150 bpm — mimicking the cardiovascular effect of a brisk walk. Heat shock proteins activate. Blood vessels open. Cortisol drops. And your body does the rest.

At Lost in Float, we use a traditional Finnish sauna — not infrared. The science on traditional saunas is far more established, and the therapeutic temperatures are significantly higher. We stick to what the research has actually measured. Furthermore, our sauna is meticulously maintained and cleaned to a standard most shared saunas in Lincoln don't come close to.

What happens inside your body.

At 195°F, your body responds to heat the same way it responds to exercise — because physiologically, it's doing something very similar. Core temperature rises, your cardiovascular system works hard, and adaptive proteins activate throughout your body. The difference is that sauna does this without any physical strain — making it uniquely accessible for people of all fitness levels.

❤️
Cardiovascular Training
Core temperature rises 2-3°F and heart rate climbs to 100-150 bpm — mimicking moderate cardio. Blood vessels dilate and circulation surges throughout the body. Furthermore, with regular use, vascular elasticity improves and blood pressure decreases. The cardiovascular data from Finnish longevity research is among the strongest in wellness science.
🛡️
Heat Shock Proteins
Heat activates protective proteins (HSPs) that clear cellular damage, repair misfolded proteins, and reduce inflammation throughout the body. Additionally, HSPs cross the blood-brain barrier — protecting neurons from oxidative stress and reducing neuroinflammation. This mechanism is believed to underlie sauna's dramatic effects on dementia and Alzheimer's risk.
😌
Mood & Stress Reset
Sauna triggers a significant endorphin release and a measurable drop in cortisol. Furthermore, heat activates the parasympathetic nervous system, creating a deep relaxation response. Most people leave feeling calmer, sharper, and sleeping more deeply. Regular sauna use is associated with significantly reduced rates of depression and anxiety.
What the research actually shows

20+ years of Finnish longevity data.

4-7x
Kuopio Heart Study
Sessions per week associated with 50% lower cardiovascular death risk compared to once per week.
65%
KIHD Study, Finland
Lower risk of Alzheimer's disease in people who sauna 4 or more times per week.
40%
Laukkanen et al.
Lower all-cause mortality in frequent sauna users. One of the strongest longevity signals in observational research.

These figures come from observational research — they show strong associations, not proven causation. However, the consistency and magnitude of the effects across multiple decades of data is striking. Combined with the known physiological mechanisms, the evidence for sauna as a longevity tool is compelling.

Heart & Circulation
Regular sauna use produces measurable improvements in cardiovascular health — lower blood pressure, improved vascular elasticity, and better circulation. The Finnish longevity data shows a 50% reduction in cardiovascular death risk with 4-7 sessions per week. Your heart is a muscle. Sauna trains it without impact.
🧠
Brain Protection
Heat shock proteins cross the blood-brain barrier and protect neurons from damage and inflammation. Frequent sauna users show dramatically lower rates of Alzheimer's and dementia. Additionally, enhanced brain blood flow improves cognitive function and mental clarity. Regular sauna use is one of the most accessible neuroprotective habits available.
😌
Stress & Sleep
Sauna triggers a significant cortisol drop and endorphin release. The deep parasympathetic activation during and after a session carries over into sleep — regular sauna users consistently report deeper, more restorative sleep. Most people feel the stress difference after just one session.
💪
Muscle Recovery
Heat increases blood flow to muscles and accelerates the clearance of lactic acid and inflammatory markers. Soreness reduces faster and recovery between training sessions improves. Heat shock proteins support muscle repair at the cellular level. Sauna after training is one of the most effective recovery habits athletes use.
⚖️
Growth Hormone
A single sauna session can increase growth hormone levels by up to 200-300%. Multiple sessions in a day have been shown to produce even larger spikes. Growth hormone supports fat metabolism, muscle preservation, and cellular repair. This is one reason sauna pairs so powerfully with strength training.
Skin & Detox
Sweating at 195°F opens pores and clears impurities from the skin. The improved circulation delivers more nutrients to skin cells, supporting collagen production and a healthier complexion. Heat shock proteins support cellular repair throughout the body. Regular sauna users consistently report clearer, healthier-looking skin.

The Finnish Secret: What 20 Years of Sauna Research Actually Tells Us

Everything you want to know.

The Finnish longevity research — including the landmark KIHD study — was conducted on traditional Finnish saunas at temperatures of 174-210°F. The dramatic risk reductions for cardiovascular disease, dementia, and all-cause mortality are specifically associated with traditional sauna use. Infrared saunas run at significantly lower temperatures (120-140°F) and have a much smaller body of research. Traditional saunas raise core body temperature more effectively, which is the key driver of heat shock protein activation and cardiovascular benefits.
Sessions are 30 minutes. This lines up well with the research protocols — most Finnish longevity studies used sessions of roughly 15-20 minutes, so 30 minutes gives you the full benefit with room to ease in and cool down. Members can book up to 2 sessions per day. We also have locker room access before and after your session, and a water fountain on site — just bring your own towel.
The longevity research is clear: more is better, up to a point. Specifically, 4-7 sessions per week shows the most dramatic risk reductions in the Finnish data. However, even 2-3 sessions per week shows meaningful benefits compared to once per week. Our members love that sauna is completely free with every membership — making frequent use easy and affordable.
This sauna is a shared social space with a maximum of 3 people per session — so it's never crowded, but you may be in it with other members. However, if you want a fully private sauna experience, our Fire & Ice suite includes a private sauna as part of the session. Additionally, we have a women's only sauna coming soon.
A quick shower before entering is good etiquette in a shared space — and we ask all guests to do so. After your session, a cool or cold shower helps close pores and rinse off sweat. Transitioning from hot to cool is a mild form of contrast therapy — many of our members combine sauna with a cold plunge session for the full vascular pump effect. We also clean our sauna to a standard most shared saunas in Lincoln don't come close to.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Sauna pairs exceptionally well with cold plunge (contrast therapy), float therapy (deep relaxation stacking), and red light therapy. Many members use sauna as a daily habit and layer other services on top. The compounding effects of multiple modalities is one of the biggest advantages of having a full wellness center under one roof.
Consult your doctor before using sauna if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, recent heart attack, severe heart disease, or are pregnant. Additionally, avoid sauna if you have consumed alcohol, as it significantly increases the risk of overheating and dehydration. Otherwise, sauna is safe and appropriate for most healthy adults — including older adults, for whom the longevity benefits are particularly well documented.
Avoid large meals within 1-2 hours of your session. Sauna increases heart rate and blood flow — digestion competes for that blood flow and can make the experience uncomfortable. However, a light snack beforehand is fine. Hydration is important — drink water before, and consider electrolytes if you're planning a long or multiple-round session.
